The US announced new sanctions on dozens of individuals and entities for alleged human rights abuses or corruption in nine countries, including Russia, China and Iran.
The latest list of sanctions includes the Central Election Commission of Russia, which Washington has accused of helping oversee and monitor what the US has called “fake referendums” in Russian-controlled parts of Ukraine, while also sanctioning 15 of its members.
The US Treasury Department also imposed measures against four people it accused of being directly involved in Russia’s “leakage operations”.
Meanwhile, the White House announced that US President Joe Biden approved $275 million in military aid to Ukraine.
National Security Council spokesman John Kirby said this new aid “will be sent soon” to give Ukraine “new capabilities in its air defenses to counter the drone threat.”
Kirby also told reporters that Washington is very concerned about defense cooperation between Iran and Russia, and that Washington will use the tools at its disposal to break it up. He added that the US administration will ask its allied countries to discuss and address this cooperation between Iran and Russia.
