Roberta Metsola decided to suspend all the powers of Eva Kaili as vice-president of the European Parliament.
Specifically, the President of the European Parliament states:
“In light of the ongoing judicial investigation, I have decided to suspend with immediate effect all the powers, duties and tasks I have entrusted to you in your capacity as Vice-President of the European Parliament.”
Earlier, the president of the Social Democrats (S&D), Iratxe Garcia Perez, called for the removal of Mrs. Caili.
As she explained in her post on twitter, the Social Democrats will invoke article 21 of the European Parliament’s rules of procedure at the next Conference of Presidents in order to remove Ms. Kaili from her position. In addition, Mrs. Perez notes that while the investigations are ongoing, Eva Kaili must be replaced, in order to protect the credibility of the institution and not to lose the trust of the citizens.
S&Ds will request a new point in the agenda of the next EP conference of presidents, based on art. 21 of the rules of procedure.
Given the investigation, Eva Kaili should be replaced as EP vice-president in order to protect the institution’s respectability & citizens’ trust
