The hit series Peaky Blinders is based on the real-life gang of the same name based in the Midlands (central England) that operated in the late nineteenth century.

This gang, and others like it, arose out of the poor living conditions and economic difficulties that prevailed in industrial England in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Poverty was the main cause, with boys starting their criminal activities as pickpockets.

The British, particularly in the Midlands and northern England, faced great deprivation and poverty. For young boys and men out of work and with little job prospects, robbery and violence became a way of life.
