Pressured in the streets by a wave of protests, the new president of Peru, Dina Boluarte, said this Monday (12) that she will present a bill to Congress to bring forward the elections to 2024 – in the country, presidential terms last five years, so that Boluarte would remain in the post until 2026.
In a message to the population shown on TV, the former deputy of Pedro Castillo, arrested after a failed coup d’état attempt, said she was complying with the will of the citizenry and also announced the establishment of a state of emergency in the country to “recover the control of internal order”.
In the streets, protesters demand Castillo’s release and also the immediate calling of early elections. Social chaos escalated after the death of two protesters in the city of Andahuaylas on Sunday (11), amid police repression.
