The winter storm threatens to cause chaos from Idaho and Wisconsin to Arizona and New Mexico through Thursday as it moves slowly eastward, the National Weather Service (NWS) warned.
Blizzard warnings have been issued for parts of Wyoming, Montana, South Dakota and Nebraska where snow is expected to reach 2 feet. According to the NWS, wind gusts will approach 97 kilometers per hour.
“Get your shovels ready, shop for food and check what other supplies you need. Roads will be difficult to navigate,” emergency services in Pennington County, South Dakota, said via Twitter.
Driving on snowy roads will be dangerous or impossible, the NWS said.
Many school districts in Idaho, South Dakota and Nebraska delayed the start of classes today due to the inclement weather. Some schools did not function at all.
Blizzards are also expected in Minnesota and Wisconsin. Frost will form in some areas which may cause power outages.
The temperature across this region could even drop at -29 degrees Celsius. In such conditions a person can get frostbite, as long as their skin is exposed, within 30 minutes.
To the south, in Arizona and New Mexico, strong winds and snowfall are expected in the mountains.
