Almost everything will be closed from tomorrow until January 14 in the Netherlands, as the country’s Prime Minister Mark Rutte announced a “tough” lockdown for stopping the pandemic in the shadow of the spread of the Omicron mutation.
“It’s the same recipe as a year ago,” a cabinet member told De Telegraaf.
The Dutch will spend the Christmas holidays with closed restaurants, cafes, casinos, museums, shops, cinemas and even hairdressers.
Secondary schools and universities will close a week earlier.
The Omicron mutation is spreading rapidly, as it has now been identified in 89 countries around the world.
The confirmed cases of this mutation are doubled every 1.5 to 3 days while the actual number of cases is considered to be multiple.
There are also plans for further measures in Italy, with the country’s prime minister, Mario Draghi, convening a cabinet meeting on the issue next Thursday, Christmas Eve.
