Spain: Bill for 9-day paid carer’s leave presented by the government

by

In May Spain became the first country in Europe to grant paid leave to women suffering from dysmenorrhea.

The Spanish government today unveiled a bill that would see workers entitled to up to nine days of paid carer’s leave a year, while extending family rights to people living under the same roof, even if they are not related between them.

Although in the European Union each country applies its own legislation on carer’s leave, with this bill Spain leads the way when it comes to paid leave.

The right to five days’ unpaid leave to care for sick relatives is generally recognized in the EU.

France grants leave of up to three months, but not with full pay.

Germany provides ten days of unpaid carer’s leave.

The Spanish bill has been pushed for months by the Socialists’ partner in government, the left-wing Unidas Podemos party, ahead of parliamentary elections next year.

The party relies on laws that focus on social issues to differentiate itself from Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez’s Socialists.
