The 27 member states of the European Union agreed tonight to impose new sanctions against Russia in retaliation for the Russian military’s invasion of Ukraine, the Czech EU presidency announced.

Among other things, the Commission had recommended a ban on any new investment in the Russian mining industry, a ban on the export to Russia of components for the manufacture of UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicles) and stricter restrictions on the export of products that could be used by its “war machine”. The agreement on this ninth package of EU sanctions against Moscow was reached unanimously by the ambassadors of the “27” in Brussels on the sidelines of the summit. Only the formalities remain to be put in writing and signed (tomorrow, Friday), the Czech EU presidency said in a tweet.
