Malaysia: The death toll from the landslide now rises to 18 – Among them children

The dead have reached 18 from landslide that occurred at dawn. Children were among the dead who were sleeping in tents at an unlicensed camp when the landslide struck, officials said, as rescue teams searched through thick mud and uprooted trees for survivors.

The landslide occurred in Selangor state, near the capital Kuala Lumpur at around 3am (local time, 21:00 Greek time yesterday) crushing a farm camp which officials said was operating illegally.

The victims included three children and 10 women, according to fire and rescue services.

Photos posted on the Father’s Organic Farm Facebook account show a farm in a small valley, with a large area where tents can be set up.

Its owners could operate the site as an organic farm, but had not applied for a permit to operate three campsites on their property, local government Development chief Nga Kor Ming told reporters.

According to him, if the owners are found guilty of breaking the law, they can be jailed for up to three years or fined up to 50,000 ringgit ($11,300). Nga added that he ordered a seven-day closure of campsites near rivers, on hillsides and other dangerous spots across the region.
