Death toll from floods and landslides in Kinshasa rises to 169

by

Heavy rains caused widespread flooding and landslides from Monday night to Tuesday morning, destroying more than 280 houses in the Mont Engafula district and a large section of the N1 highway linking the capital Kinshasa to the port of Matadi.

The death toll from the floods and landslides that hit the wider region of Kinshasa, the capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo, in the past few days has reached 169, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) announced yesterday.

Heavy rains caused widespread flooding and landslides from Monday night to Tuesday morning, destroying more than 280 houses in the Mont Engafula district and a large section of the N1 highway linking the capital Kinshasa to the port of Matadi.

A team from OCHA and the Ministry of Social Affairs of DR Congo visited the affected areas to assess the extent of the destruction caused by the bad weather.

“The three-day mourning period ended today (yesterday Friday),” says the OCHA statement, in which it is pointed out that the government of the DR Congo pledged to ensure the dignified burial of the victims.

From the scattered fishing villages on the banks of the Congo River, the capital Kinshasa was gradually formed, which over the years developed into a metropolis of 15 million inhabitants. Unplanned construction has made the area vulnerable to floods and landslides, the frequency of which has increased due to climate change.
