The agreement between Azerbaijan, Georgia, Romania and Hungary concerns a 1,000 MW cable with a length of 1,100 kilometers for the transmission of electricity across the Black Sea

The leaders of Azerbaijan, Georgia, Romania and Hungary today signed an agreement for an undersea electricity cable in the Black Sea to transport ‘green’ energy from Azerbaijan to Europe.

The deal is for a 1,100km 1,000MW cable to carry electricity from Azerbaijan to Romania via the Black Sea, part of the European Union’s wider efforts to diversify its energy resources amid the war in Ukraine.

“Given the current security framework characterized by military aggression against Ukraine, we need to cooperate better and show greater solidarity to mitigate common challenges,” Romanian President Klaus Iohannis said at the meeting, which was also attended by European Union President Ursula von der Leyen Committee. “Our energy cooperation responds to a strategic thrust. It will improve our energy resilience and ensure the diversification of supply and transport channels. It is something that is determined by the market, given the increased demand for energy in Europe,” said Johannis.

Ursula von der Leyen told the meeting that the EU’s strategy of turning its back on Russian fossil fuels and diversifying towards what she called “reliable energy partners” was paying off. She said that the EU is ready to provide financial support to the project depending on the results of the feasibility study. “It will help strengthen our security of supply by bringing electricity from renewable sources to the EU via Romania and Hungary,” von de Leyen said.
