Italian and Belgian prosecutors are working closely together to continue the Qatargate investigations

The testimonies of her colleagues Eva Kaili in the European Parliament and the attitude of the Greek vice-president of the European Parliament towards Qatar is hosted by the Guardian newspaper after the revelations of the Qatargate scandal, which has shocked the whole of Europe.

“Eva Kaili was Roberta Metsola’s representative for the Middle East. He was very interested in Qatar. Some colleagues had given Ms. Kaili the nickname ”Qatar Lobby Spokesman”» initially reports the British newspaper.

An MEP remembers having coffee with Eva Kaili, when the vice-president of the European Parliament asked for his help “in order to improve the language” in a text of conclusions on Qatar and the World Cup” is added to the publication

When MEPs later voted to condemn the deaths of thousands of migrant workers during World Cup preparations, calling on Qatar to investigate, Kaili was unhappy with the text. “I just thought, ok, I don’t know why he’s interested in supporting Qatar,” the MEP said.

In this particular publication, a special reference is also made to Eva Kaili’s speech at the European Parliament, in which she described Qatar as a “pioneer country for labor rights”, ignoring countless reports of worker deaths.

German Greens MEP Hanna Neumann, who chairs the European Parliament’s delegation for relations with the Arabian Peninsula, recalls that Eva Kaili had “a tough position that was often the same as the Qatari ambassador would have”. .

Speaking to the Guardian, Hanna Neumann recalled a visit to Saudi Arabia in 2020 in which Eva Kaili had raised an issue about a Qatari princess at every meeting, including the meeting MEPs had on the delivery of humanitarian aid in Yemen. “When she was given the floor, she did not ask any questions about Yemen but instead raised the issue of the Qatari princess again. And I thought he was either a little naive or he didn’t understand what the meeting was about,” Neumann commented.

Another MEP, Eric Marcord, who led the group that drafted the MEP’s position on the Qatar visa deal, told NPR that “it was extremely clear that Kylie was in favor of being granted Qatar the visa waiver quickly and without many conditions” and that “he was not so interested in other countries”.

The Guardian refers to Eva Kaili as a former news presenter from Thessaloniki, who was a glamorous presence in the European Parliament who attracted attention for her elegant dresses and handbags as well as her interest in high technology and cryptocurrencies.

“Eva and Giorgi were the “golden couple”. He was an amateur sailor who had an Instagram filled with photos of crystal clear water trips, beach sunsets and mountainside selfies. Kylie had social media with photos of herself speaking at cryptocurrency conferences at the European Parliament or from visits to Oman in which she posed with a headscarf loosely covering her long blonde hair on her head with the caption “building bridges with our friendliest neighbours” she concludes the newspaper.

In close cooperation Italian and Belgian prosecutors

At the same time, prosecutors in Milan continue to work closely with their Belgian colleagues, with the aim of clearing up the corruption case uncovered in Brussels, the Italian press reports.

According to the newspaper La Repubblica, the judges of the Italian co-capital continue to investigate the movements of seven “suspicious” bank accounts, which are said to belong to Francesco Giorgi, Antonio Panzeri and the head of the European Trade Union Confederation, Luca Vizentini. It is suspected, in fact, that some of the money, the product of bribes, may not be in Belgium, but in Italy.

As the publication states, the raid of the economic police also took place in the office of a well-known tax expert in the Italian co-capital. The Italian centre-left Democratic Party, on the other hand, has decided to suspend – temporarily – from its membership, MEP Andrea Coccolino, who is allegedly involved in the whole investigation, but has not received a court summons to apologize. Francesco Giorgi was his assistant, after the end of Antonio Panzeri’s term in the European Parliament. A similar decision, of a temporary suspension until the completion of the judicial investigations, was taken for Pancheri, by the left-wing party Article One, immediately after his arrest.

According to the Italian television network La 7, finally, Brussels’ investigations are not only focused on Qatar, but at this stage they mainly concern the long-term relationship that Antonio Pantzeri allegedly had with Morocco for a possible attempt to influence its decisions European Parliament.
