Famous Iranian actress and ardent women’s rights activist, Tarane Alidusti, was arrested in Iran today amid a protest movement that is entering its fourth month, according to local media reports.
Known for her roles in several of director Asghar Faradi’s films, Tarane Alidousti has repeatedly expressed her support with Instagram posts for the protests, which were sparked by the September 16 death of Maksha Amini, a young Iranian-Kurdish woman who was arrested for violating the Islamic Republic’s strict dress code for women.
“Taraneh Alidusti was arrested for her recent actions in publishing false information and content and for inciting chaos,” Tasnim news agency reported, without specifying where she was arrested.
The 38-year-old actress complained to authorities on December 8 over the hanging of Mohsen Sekari, who was executed after being accused of “warring against God” under Islamic law.
“Any international organization watching this bloodbath without reacting is a disgrace to humanity,” he wrote on Instagram.
In November, she had promised to stay in her country, “pay the price” needed to defend her rights and stop working to support the families of those killed or arrested during the protests.
Tarane Alidusti’s most famous role is the one she played in Asghar Faradi’s film The Merchant, which won the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film in 2017.
A figure in Iranian cinema since she was a teenager, she also starred in Said Rustagi’s film “Leila’s Brothers”, which was presented at the Cannes Film Festival this year.
Several Iranian film figures have been arrested by the authorities even before the current wave of protest, including directors Mohammad Rasulov and Jafar Panahi, who are still in custody.
Since mid-September, thousands of Iranians and about 40 foreigners have been arrested and more than 2,000 people have been charged in connection with the protests, according to judicial authorities. A total of 23 men were hanged after being found to be linked to the riots.
