The 99-year-old former US Secretary of State under Presidents Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford has met Vladimir Putin several times
The time is near for a negotiated peace in Ukraine to reduce the risk of another devastating world war, but dreams of breaking up Russia could unleash nuclear chaos, veteran US diplomat Henry Kissinger said.
Kissinger, who was US secretary of state under Presidents Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford, has met Vladimir Putin several times since he became president in 2000.
“The time is at hand to build on the strategic changes already achieved and incorporate them into a new framework for achieving negotiated peace,” Kissinger wrote in The Spectator magazine, in an article titled “How to Avoid Another World War war”.
Kissinger, 99 today, said in May he had proposed a ceasefire under which Russia would withdraw to front lines before the February 24 invasion but Crimea would be “negotiable”.
