He exercised his right to vote for the Archbishop Elections

The President of the Republic of Cyprus Nikos Anastasiadis exercised his right to vote for the Archbishop Elections, who was at the Church of Agios Nektarios, in Limassol, accompanied by his wife.

In his statements immediately afterwards, to journalists, President Anastasiades, asked to say what he would like the next Archbishop to be like, said that “the current Archbishop is also the spiritual leader of the place, for the Greek Orthodox. Therefore, I sincerely hope that the best will be elected”.

Asked to say whether he was sure of his choice in advance, the President of the Republic said that “I had crystallized an opinion, an opinion. I live in this place, I experience our hierarchs. I repeat, let the best of the best be elected.”

In response to a journalist’s remark that he will not have the opportunity to work with the new Archbishop, since his term ends shortly, the President of the Republic said that “I will have the opportunity, I believe, during the enthronement to be”.

Asked if during the enthronement he himself will send his own messages about what is expected of the new Archbishop, the President of the Republic said that “the role of the Church is a historical role, it is a spiritual role, it is social, it includes everything that love He teaches of God”.

Asked if this role is not political, the President answered “no, I don’t think that in modern times the Church can be involved in politics.

Of course, he always had and will have an opinion, especially on national issues. In politics, it is now purely a matter of the democratic freedoms of the people, of the institutions, as determined in each State and, therefore, I do not see the political role of the Church in terms of what is happening in the State”.
