Vladimir Putin to make a major announcement at a Defense Ministry meeting – Will he further escalate the conflict with Ukraine and the West, and how?
The Russian president Vladimir Putin will make a “major announcement” at a defense ministry meeting within the next week, according to Russian state media, with everyone wondering whether, and how, he will further escalate the conflict with Ukraine and the West.
“We await important announcements,” Pavel Zarubin, host of the “Moscow.Kremlin.Putin” program, told state broadcaster WGTRK today.
According to the televised program, Putin will preside over an annual expanded meeting of the defense ministry. The exact date of the meeting is not yet known.
The Russian president is expected to go to Minsk tomorrow Monday for talks with the leader of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko.
At a cabinet meeting last week, Putin had called for adjustments to the weapons programs.
It is seen as likely that he will continue to push for the transformation of the Russian economy into a war economy, as Russian troops continue to face supply problems in the war in Ukraine.
Due to ongoing difficulties in the war, Putin has largely avoided the issue in recent weeks, while cancelled his traditional annual press conference just before Christmas.
Russia “will not accept” the ceiling on the price of Russian oil and is considering how to respond, the Kremlin said in early December, responding to a deal by Western powers aimed at curbing a critical source of funding for Moscow’s war in Ukraine.
