The coronavirus is still the leading cause of death in Spain

Spain’s statistics agency INE said 20,915 people died of COVID-19 in the first half of 2022, according to provisional figures, up from 29,300 in the same period in 2021.

The total number of deaths from the new coronavirus since the pandemic broke out has reached 135,857 in Spain by the end of June 2022.

The spread of the virus slowed significantly in the second half of 2022 after the most recent wave of the highly contagious Omicron variant subsided.

INE also reported that the number of suicides rose by 5.1% in the first half of 2022 compared to a year earlier, reaching 2,015 deaths — most among external causes such as falls, drowning and traffic accidents.
