Netanyahu v. New York Times: Undermining Israel’s incoming government

by

“After downplaying the Holocaust for years on their back pages and demonizing Israel on their front pages for decades, the New York Times now shamefully calls for the undermining of Israel’s elected government,” Netanyahu tweeted.

Israel’s caretaker Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu today accused the New York Times of calling for the undermining of the future government he is negotiating to form.

“After downplaying the Holocaust for years on their back pages and demonizing Israel on their front pages for decades, the New York Times now shamefully calls for the undermining of Israel’s elected government,” Netanyahu tweeted.

“While the NYT continues to delegitimize the only true democracy in the Middle East and America’s best ally in the region, I will continue to ignore their baseless advice and instead focus on building a stronger and more prosperous country by strengthening ties with America, in expanding peace with our neighbors and securing the future of the one and only Jewish state,” he added.

On Saturday, the American newspaper criticized the government Netanyahu is negotiating to form in an editorial titled “The ideal of democracy in a Jewish state is at risk.”

Netanyahu’s right-wing coalition won the November 1 election, Israel’s fifth election in less than four years. However, his association with far-right parties has caused concerns both inside the country and abroad.

The newspaper particularly criticized the far-right Itamar Ben-Gvir, who is expected to be appointed Minister of National Security, warning that his actions “risk triggering a new round of Arab-Israeli violence”.

Ben-Gvir has far-right views on the Palestinians. He has previously called for the displacement of Palestinians and sparked a wave of violence in East Jerusalem by establishing an office in the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood.

Last month, Israeli President Isaac Herzog said in a leaked audio that “the whole world is concerned” about Ben-Gvir’s far-right views.

Palestinians warn that Netanyahu’s incoming government will be one of the most right-wing in the history of the Jewish state.
