UN: Germany condemns arms deliveries from Iran to Russia

Germany on Monday strongly condemned Iran’s arms deliveries to Russia, saying they further worsened the situation after the Russian military’s invasion of Ukraine on February 24.

German ambassador to the United Nations Andie Leenderze underlined that the UAVs supplied by Tehran to Moscow “gave Russia additional means to attack political infrastructure and terrorize Ukrainian civilians”, addressing the Security Council.

He urged the United Nations Secretariat to accept Ukraine’s request to study evidence of Iran’s role in the war.

Ms Leenderje also criticized Iran for escalating uranium enrichment activity.

“Iran’s nuclear energy program has advanced more than ever before and has become a greater threat to international peace and security than ever before,” said the German ambassador.

Iran is currently enriching uranium to a purity level of 60%, which according to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is not far from the 90% that allows nuclear weapons to be built.

The international agreement on Iran’s nuclear energy program, signed in 2015, stipulated, among other things, limiting uranium enrichment to 4%. However, after the unilateral withdrawal of the US in 2018, by the decision of then US President Donald Trump, from this agreement, officially the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), Tehran began to breach its obligations, in retaliation for the re-imposition of sanctions by Washington.

Iran’s delivery of remote-controlled drones to Russia has been characterized by Western governments as a violation of the 2015 agreement and the UN Security Council resolution that ratified it. Iran categorically rejects this interpretation.
