Japan’s new defense strategy highlights Russia’s military positions in Asia and its expanding cooperation with China as a source of “grave security concern”
North Korea denounced Japan’s new strategy today in terms of defensecharacterizing the “serious” threat to “international peace” that has “fundamentally changed” the regional security environment, warning at the same time that it will take “real” action in response.
Last week, Japan unveiled its new defense policy, which envisages a dramatic increase in its military capabilities over the next five years, including its ability to strike back against what Tokyo perceives as threats from China and North Korea, states with nuclear arsenals.

“Japan is creating a serious security crisis (…) by adopting a new strategy that practically formalizes the possession of pre-emptive strike capabilities against other states,” a spokesman for North Korea’s foreign ministry said in a press release.
“The formalization of Japan’s new offensive line has fundamentally changed the security environment in East Asia,” the statement, carried by the official KCNA news agency, continued.
Tokyo will be held accountable for this “very dangerous and wrong choice”, interpreted the representative of the North Korean Foreign Ministry, warning that the Pyongyang she will continue to show “the extent of her concern and displeasure with robust actions.”

For its part, the US presidency considered the change in Japan’s defense policy signals the “strengthening and modernization” of the military alliance of the two countries.
The announcement of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of North Korea accuses the US of having “instigated” the “rearmament” of Japan and the new “invasion plans” that it says Tokyo is preparing, also emphasizing that Washington has no right to raise an issue about Pyongyang’s effort to strengthen its defenses.
