Peru: Mexico’s president repeats offer to grant asylum to Pedro Castillo

On Sunday night, Pedro Castillo’s successor, Dina Bolluarte, who was sworn in as the new head of state hours after he was relieved of his duties, said she had been informed by the Foreign Ministry that the request to grant asylum in Mexico to members of her predecessor’s family was approved.

The Mexican president said yesterday that the applications are being processed: there is “a process that must be completed”, he explained.

“We keep the door open for the president of Peru, his family and all those (…) who feel they are being persecuted,” he assured anyway.

Furthermore, Mr. López Obrador supported the proposal to speed up the presidential and parliamentary elections.

Last week, Ms. Boluarte submitted a proposal to Congress to expedite the election to December 2023, but lawmakers rejected it. They will vote again on the issue today.
