A barometric low from the Pacific Ocean, combined with very cold, arctic air over British Columbia, dropped the temperature to very low levels.

Vancouver International Airport has temporarily suspended all inbound flights and canceled some departures due to heavy snow and reduced visibility from the winter storm bearing down on Canada’s west coast.

A barometric low from the Pacific Ocean, combined with very cold, arctic air over British Columbia, dropped the temperature to very low levels.

Some parts of the province were covered overnight in a 25-centimeter layer of snow, according to an Environment Canada meteorologist.

Vancouver Airport said it expects more flight cancellations or delays today, but possibly in the coming days, due to the heavy snowfall and its “unprecedented” impacts.

Data from flight tracking website Flightaware shows a total of 130 flights due to arrive or depart today have been canceled and another 38 are experiencing delays.

Meteorologist Ross MacDonald said the Vancouver area was being hit by a “severe snowstorm” but the weather was expected to improve in the afternoon.
