Pedro Castillo’s family goes into exile in Mexico amid spiraling crises in Peru

by

The family of former Peruvian president Pedro Castillo, arrested after a failed coup d’état attempt, arrived in Mexico this Wednesday (21), where he will receive political asylum, said a member of the Mexican foreign ministry.

On Twitter, Martin Borrego, director of the folder for South America, published a photo with Castillo’s relatives and wrote that the measure is an example of the Mexican diplomatic tradition. “Proud of the foreign policy that continues to save lives in Latin America.”

Castillo is in preventive detention, accused of rebellion and conspiracy after disrespecting precepts of the Peruvian Magna Carta and trying to dissolve the Legislative and concentrate powers in the Executive. Shortly after his arrest, the government of fellow leftist Andrés Manuel López Obrador, known as AMLO, offered him asylum.

This Tuesday (20), in retaliation for AMLO’s demonstrations in defense of Castillo, Peru declared the Mexican ambassador in Lima, Pablo Monroy, “persona non grata” and ordered him to leave the country within 72 hours.

The Peruvian chancellery, which now reports to President Dina Boluarte — Castillo’s deputy who took over after his fall — said the expulsion was due to repeated statements by the highest Mexican authorities on the political situation in Peru.
