When the boat left, it was carrying 16 people, but 9 others boarded later, at another point. Kabale said “the wind” caused the wreck.
Two people have died and 10 others are missing after a motorized canoe capsized on Lake Edward in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, local authorities said today.
The small boat had set sail from Kyawinionge, in North Kivu province, bound for another village in the region, Kisaka. It was carrying about 20 choristers of a Protestant church and capsized at around 5am.
“We found five alive and two dead. The rest are missing in the lake. The dugout overturned while they were out in the open, about 10 kilometers from Kyawinionge,” said a local official, Patrick Kambale.

Pastor Palukou Kavoutuiraki, the head of the church to which the castaways belonged, confirmed that a total of 24 people, including three babies, were on board the boat. “Our investigations will continue until Sunday,” he explained.
In L.D. of the Congo, where the roads are few and far between, travel is through rivers and lakes, yet shipwrecks are a frequent occurrence and usually with many victims.
