Al Qaeda on Friday released a 35-minute recording in which the terrorist group claims its leader, Ayman al-Zawahribelieved to have been killed in a US operation last August, said the SITE group which monitors the activity of jihadist groups online.

The recording is undated. The transcript does not clearly indicate the time frame in which it could have been done.

Zawahri was killed in a US invasion of Afghanistan on July 31, 2022, which is considered the most serious blow to the organization since the death of its founder, Osama bin Laden, in May 2011 in Pakistan.

Zawahri had been in hiding for years and the operation to locate him was the result of “careful, patient and persistent” work by counterterrorism and intelligence agencies, a US official said at the time.

Al Qaeda has not named his successor. But it seems that the main contender for its leadership is the Saif Al Adel, a mysterious, former Egyptian special forces officer. The US is offering a reward of up to $10 million for information leading to his arrest.
