US court grants Sikh marines right to grow beards and wear turbans

The argument that this would be harmful to the cohesion of the industry was rejected.

The US Marine Corps has been forced by a federal court to allow Sikh recruits to grow beards and wear the traditional turban, rejecting an argument that doing so would harm the cohesion of the sector.

The United States Army, Navy, Air Force and Coast Guard already allow Sikhs to join their ranks by respecting the rules of this monotheistic religion, which emerged in the 16th century in northwestern India. Sikhism prohibits men from cutting their hair and beards and requires them to wear a turban.

However, the US Marine Corps refused to grant exemptions to three Sikhs who sought to enlist last year, arguing that they had to “lose their individuality” in order to function as a group.

A Washington appeals court rejected that argument on Friday, finding that the Marine Corps administration had failed to provide evidence that the beard and turban would affect safety or the smooth conduct of training.
