British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak was heavily criticized today for appearing to be out of touch with ordinary people when he asked a homeless man at a charity event if he was an entrepreneur and wanted to go into finance.

Sunak, a former Goldman Sachs executive and one of Britain’s richest men, was serving breakfast at a London homeless shelter on Friday when he struck up a conversation with a man he said was called Dean.

“Do you work in business?” the prime minister was heard asking, handing him a plate of sausages, toast and eggs.

“No, I’m homeless. Actually, I’m homeless,” replied his interlocutor.

Angela Rayner, the deputy leader of the opposition Labor Party, tweeted a snapshot of the conversation, calling it “sad”. Another Labor MP, Bill Esterson, said Sunak was “out of place”.

The awkward dialogue with the homeless man began when he asked the prime minister if he “fixed the economy”. The homeless man then told him that he was interested in business and finance, and Sunak replied that he too used to work in finance.

“Is that something you’d like to do?” Sunak asked the man.

“Yeah, I wouldn’t mind. But, I don’t know, I’d like to get over Christmas first,” Dean said.
