USA: Five-meter python found and returned to its owner

by

Workers at a wildlife sanctuary in Austin, Texas saved a python that was almost five meters long!

As CNN reports, the snake is 16 feet (4.8768 meters) long and has been missing for months.

The Austin Animal Center wrote on its Facebook page that it received a call from residents about the huge reptile last Monday.

“Due to the temperatures the snake was in a state of lethargy and some residents were able to catch it and keep it in their garage,” the shelter officials wrote.

And while callers often exaggerate the size of snakes, in this case the python was as big as they thought!

Residents said they had been seeing the huge snake in the neighborhood since July, according to the Facebook post.

The shelter placed the snake in temporary shelter overnight and then asked the Austin Zoo to provide “more appropriate” housing.

Meanwhile, sanctuary staff members recalled a social media post they had seen months earlier about a missing python.

A little research led them to a post that included information about the python’s owner.

Shelter staff contacted the owner, who identified the snake based on a “unique characteristic.”

And they found out the snake’s owner was visiting Austin from Dallas when a thief broke into his car and stole a bag with the python inside.

It’s unclear at what point the thief set the snake free to roam Austin.

Now the snake has been returned to its owner, according to the Facebook post.

The reticulated python is one of the largest species of snake in the world, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, reaching over 20 feet (6 meters).
