About 10 people were buried today by an avalanche in the Voralberg region of western Austria, local police said.

“One person was rescued and the operation to locate the rest continues,” a local authorities spokesman told AFP.

Helicopters and several teams of rescuers, with the help of specially trained dogs, are involved in the search and rescue operation. According to the Austrian agency APA, about 100 people participate in the operation.

“We are doing everything we can to save the fans of winter sports,” said the municipality of Lech.

The avalanche was triggered around 15:00 local time (16:00 Greek time) at an altitude of 2,700 meters, in the Lech-Chirch free ski area.

There is no information on the details of the missing persons.

Rescue services had already warned this weekend that there was a high risk of avalanches in this zone and in neighboring Tyrol.
