“It’s still too early to say it’s over,” New York Gov. Kathy Hokul said, noting that forecasters were predicting another 12 inches of snow.
The fierce snowstorm that has been hitting the US for days and has claimed the lives of dozens of people – at least 25 in a New York county – “is still far from over”, the authorities warned today.
“It’s still too early to say it’s over,” New York Gov. Kathy Hokul said, noting that forecasters were predicting another 12 inches of snow.
“It’s clearly the storm of the century,” she added at a news conference in her hometown of Buffalo.
Although the intensity of the storm has died down compared to previous days, “it’s always dangerous to be outside,” he added.
Western New York, though used to cold and storms, was covered in two feet of snow over the weekend. The temperature has remained at polar levels since last week.
In Erie County, whose capital is Buffalo, 25 people have lost their lives. In Ohio, nine people were killed in severe weather-related crashes.
Buffalo remains almost sealed off due to the impressive amount of snow that has blanketed it. Images from the city center show cars on the streets, covered in snow.
“Please, unless you are a member of rescue crews, do not drive. The conditions are bad”, was the appeal addressed to the citizens by a local official, Mark Polonkarz. The curfew remains in place, but some residents have defied it.
“What we’re doing today is taking people to doctors and hospitals,” County Sheriff John Garcia explained this morning. “The roads are now starting to become passable because the wind has died down,” he explained.
At the height of the storm, rescue crews were unable to reach people in need, such as those trapped in their cars or without power in their homes.
“It’s heartbreaking to hear calls from families with children who say they froze,” Garcia commented.
According to Polonkarz, more than 12,000 buildings remain without electricity. In some, power is not expected to be restored before Tuesday.
Moreover, the chaos at airports continued today as at least 2,600 flights were cancelled. Conditions are expected to gradually improve as the days go by.
