The American politician George Santos, deputy elected by the Republican Party, admitted this Monday (26) that he lied about his professional training and his professional history. The case was revealed last week by The New York Times.
The son of Brazilian immigrants, Santos was elected in November in the midterms in New York. He presented his side of the story to two conservative American outlets, the New York Post and WABC-AM radio. Previously, he and his lawyers had declined to comment on the NYT reports.
“I’m not a criminal,” he told the NYPost, stressing that he intends to take office as a deputy in the new legislature. “My sin was embellishing my resume. I apologize. We do stupid things in life.”
He admitted to the newspaper that he did not graduate from Baruch College, where he claimed to have a degree – college officials have not found records of anyone with his name or date of birth who had finished studying there in 2010. He also said he never met. graduated from any higher education institution.
Santos further confirmed that, as the NYTimes discovered, he never worked at Citigroup or Goldman Sachs, which were mentioned in his bio. The two Wall Street firms said they had no record that he ever worked for them.
The politician would have dealt with the companies in jobs at another firm, LinkBridge Investors.
