He became the recipient of severe criticism today the prime minister of Hungary from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine. In the announcement published on the website of the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, it is underlined that Orban’s recent statements “they demonstrate a pathological lack of respect for Ukraine and the Ukrainian people fighting the Russian invaders.” Kyiv accuses Hungary’s prime minister of “political myopia”.

This is the Ukrainian government’s response to comments made by Orban in a Christmas interview he gave to the newspaper Magyar Nemzet, in which he neither more nor less claimed that the war could end if the US stopped military aid to Ukraine.

“Ukraine can only continue to fight if the US continues to support it with weapons and money. If the Americans want peace, then there will be peace,” Orban said in the interview published on Saturday.

“The Hungarian leader should ask himself whether he wants peace,” the Ukrainian foreign ministry responded, pointing out that Orban was essentially referring to a Ukrainian defeat, even though that would also raise the risk of a possible Russian invasion of Hungary.

Relations between the two neighboring countries are tense. Hungary’s prime minister has repeatedly tried to block EU support for Ukraine’s struggle and the imposition of sanctions against Russia.

Last month, Orban attended a football match wearing a scarf with a map of “Greater Hungary” depicting Ukrainian territories as part of his country.

Viktor Orbán also maintains friendly ties with Russian President Vladimir Putin, while Hungary is heavily dependent on Russian natural gas.
