At least 19 people have died in a fire that broke out at a hotel and casino on Cambodia’s border with Thailand, and authorities fear the toll will rise.
The fire broke out on Wednesday around 23:30 (local time, 18:30 Greece time) at Grand Diamond City, in the city of Paoipet, Cambodia.
“At this stage there are 19 dead. The total number of dead could be even higher,” Sek Sohom, director of the information service of Bandai Min Sey province, told AFP. The previous count was ten dead.
A rescue operation, conducted jointly by the Cambodians and the Thais, continues today. Of the charred buildings, only the foundations and pieces of their facades remain.
On the Thai side, local authorities announced that there are 13 seriously injured, said an official from the province of Sa Kaeo, which borders Cambodia.
“More than 50 people” have been taken to hospitals in this Thai province, its governor, Parinya Phothisat, said. About 60 others left the hospital after medical tests.
A total of 79 Thais, 30 Cambodians and 8 Indonesians passed through Thai hospitals, he said.
