The 54 Nano Geese from the Arctic Circle continue to enjoy the warm Greek winter – along with six little Nano Geese, the first of this year
A few 24 hours before the arrival of the new year, all 54 Nanogeese from the Arctic Circle continue to enjoy the warm Greek winter in the welcoming wetlands of Lake Kerkini.
Along with what 54 Nano Geese, there are six little Nano Geese with them, the first of this year, which their parents take care of as the apple of their eye and not unjustly, since in recent years the reproductive success for the members of the Finno-Scandinavian population has unfortunately not been so given.
In Kerkini it is wintering, like every year, and the famous Mr. Blue with his family but also a Nano Goose with an orange ring who is – in all probability – Mr. Finn!
As Georgia Alexopoulou, communication manager of the Hellenic Ornithological Society explains, speaking to APE-MPE, “Mr. Blue, thanks to the transmitter he has on him, provides us with valuable and useful information about the long journey that the Nano Geese make every year, about their resting stations and in general about their way of survival. Mr. Blue is a recognizable Dwarf Goose in many areas of Europe, so there is comprehensive information on how populations move and live.”
As for Mr. Finn, while he doesn’t often monopolize the limelight like Mr. Blue, however, seems to be the patriarch of the Nanohena population, since in 17 years of life he counts a total of 22 offspring!
“No small achievement for a bird that travels from Finland to Greece and back again every year,” emphasizes Ms. Alexopoulou, pointing out that “this Nanogoose has an orange ring on its leg, so it is recognizable, and from the annual her presence in the Kerkini area, we know how many years she has been making this journey and has reproductive activity. The rings are made on the Nano Geese, when they are still chicks. The fact that to this day this person of the Nanogoose has survived and continues to make such a long journey is an important and remarkable fact.”
While this is happening in Kerkini, in the other favorite Greek destination of the Dwarf goose, the Evros Delta, conservation experts from Hungary, Lithuania, Estonia, Finland and Greece recently met for the 3rd Life LWfG Climate Monitoring meeting.
