Bolsonaro government revokes ordinance and paves the way for Maduro to go to Lula’s inauguration

After articulating the transition team of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT), the government of President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) revoked the ordinance that barred the entry into the country of high authorities of the Venezuelan regime. Therefore, the arrival of the dictator Nicolás Maduro for the PT’s inauguration is released.

The person responsible for the ceremonial of Lula’s team, Ambassador Fernando Igreja, said, upon arriving at the Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil, headquarters of the transitional cabinet, this Friday (30th), that “there is nothing concrete about the arrival of Maduro ” and that “there is no response to the invitation to take office”.

The repeal of the act that barred the entry of high Venezuelan authorities was published in this Friday’s edition of the Official Gazette. It was signed by Antonio Ramirez Lorenzo, Deputy Minister of Justice and Public Security. The publication nullifies a 2019 act edited by the then ministers Sérgio Moro (Justice) and Ernesto Araújo (Foreign Affairs).

The ordinance published that year deals with the impediment of entry into Brazil “of senior officials of the Venezuelan regime, who, by their actions, contravene the principles and objectives of the Federal Constitution, attacking democracy, the dignity of the human person and the prevalence of human rights “.

The Bolsonaro government severed ties with the Maduro regime and recognized Juan Guaidó, one of the leaders of the Venezuelan opposition, as the legitimate head of state of the neighboring country. The future chancellor, Mauro Vieira, said during an interview with journalists in early December that the reestablishment of relations with the Maduro regime will take place right at the beginning of the Lula government. The process, according to him, will begin with the sending of a chargé d’affaires to assess the reopening of the embassy.

“Later, we will appoint an ambassador to the Venezuelan government,” he said, making it clear that he was not referring to Guaidó. “[Abriremos] embassy next to the elected government, the government of President Maduro.”
