One 1A 7-year-old boy died when the firecrackers exploded which he used while two men were maimed in explosives accidents in the first unrestricted New Year’s celebration in two years. Small-scale incidents occurred in various parts of the country.

The change of time was celebrated largely unrestricted this year for the first time after two years of coronavirus measures, with police today reporting a “significant increase” in the number of overnight operations. A 17-year-old in Leipzig was injured while using explosives and succumbed to his injuries a short time later in hospital. The Police rule out the possibility criminal activity.

At Thuringia two men were seriously injured from fireworks New Year’s Eve. A 42-year-old man had to have both arms amputated after he was seriously injured while handling firecrackers he had ordered online, and a 21-year-old man lost his arm in an accident involving illegal explosives.

In Frankfurt a firecracker caused a fire on a balcony, which then spread inside the apartment, causing serious problems for a woman from smoke inhalation. Two men were injured when fireworks exploded in the basement of an apartment building in Brandenburg. In a similar incident in Rhineland-Palatinate, three 11-year-olds suffered burns and a 39-year-old in Baden-Württemberg was seriously injured in the face by a firecracker and had to be transported by helicopter.

In Berlin police and firefighters were “massively attacked with firecrackers” while trying to put out a burning car, while in another incident, youths threw fireworks and a fire extinguisher at a parked tour bus, causing the windscreen to be completely destroyed. According to the capital’s police, 60-80 people tried to set fire to a van full of fireworks, while the Fire Service announced on Twitter that one of its vehicles suffered “extensive damage” from a fire caused by fireworks. In central Berlin, a policeman and a woman were injured by firecrackers when they were “attacked” during an operation at a shop damaged by explosives. Elsewhere in the city, “idiots are ‘shooting’ firecrackers at passers-by,” the police said on Twitter overnight.

More than 1700 businesses were registered across the country, at least 1000 more than last year. In Berlin alone, 15 emergency service personnel were injured in 38 attacks while on duty. The head of the Police Union, Stefan Ve, has again called for a ban on firecrackers. “We’ve seen across the country that they’re being used as a weapon against people,” he said.

However, incidents also occurred during festive events. At the epicenter of the protests in Berlin, the Brandenburg Gate, “several arrests” were made overnight, mostly involving the use of stun guns, and police urged the crowd to leave the area around an hour after midnight.
