For its part, the Russian Ministry of Defense announced that 63 soldiers were killed in Makiivka by a Ukrainian missile attack
Dozens of Russian soldiers were killed according to Ukraine’s military command during an attack on New Year’s Day in the town of Makiivka. It was one of the deadliest strikes as at least 400 Russian soldiers were killed in a Russian-held city in the Donetsk region.
For its part, the Russian Ministry of Defense announced that 63 soldiers were killed in Makiivka by a Ukrainian missile attack.
Daniil Bezsonov, a senior Moscow official in the Russian-held region of Donetsk, said a Ukrainian missile hit a vocational school in the town of Makiivka that housed soldiers two minutes after midnight on New Year’s Day.
“A huge blow was dealt to the professional school by the American MLRS Himars,” Bezsonov wrote in Telegram, referring to the US-supplied missiles. “There were dead and wounded, the exact number is still unknown,” he added.
Photos circulating on social media show the ruins of the building used by the Russian army as barracks.
Praise from Zelensky
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, for his part, praised Ukrainians for their gratitude to the troops and stressed that Russia’s efforts would prove futile.
“Drones, missiles, and everything else won’t help them,” he said of the Russians. “Because we are united. They are united only by fear.”
Ukraine’s air defense systems worked through the night to shoot down the incoming drones and warn communities of the impending danger, Reuters reported.
Russia, which has seized and claims to have annexed about a fifth of Ukraine, has turned to massive airstrikes against Ukrainian cities since suffering humiliating battlefield defeats in the second half of 2022.
