Jean-Marc Maniatis, the “hairstylist of the stars” of Greek origin, has passed away

The hairdresser to the stars Jean-Marc Maniatis died at the age of 80 on New Year’s Eve in Geneva, Switzerland, where he had lived for the past few years, his family and the manager of his hair salon announced today.

“It is with great emotion that we learned that Jean-Marc Maniatis passed away” on the night of December 31 to January 1, his son, Eliot Maniatis, said in a statement signed by the family and employees of his four Parisian salons.

Maniatis, of Greek origin, was born in March 1942 in France. At the age of 17, he took his first professional steps, as a hairdresser for Elle and Marie Claire magazines. He opened his first salon in 1970 in the 16th arrondissement of Paris and over the next twenty years became the hairdresser to the stars. The actors Sophie Marceau, Mireille Darque, Miu-Miu, Alain Delon, but also the American singer Prince passed through his salon. He also created the hairstyles for the fashion shows of Karl Lagerfeld, Sonia Rykiel, Andre Courez and others.

“It was a hairdressing phenomenon,” Alexandre Proti, the director of the four salons, told AFP. Maniatis died in a Geneva hospital, he clarified.

Maniatis, a father of two, died after a long illness, said his son, Elliott.
