US Tesla big gainer with 12.2% market share
Electric cars reached almost 80% – a new world record – of new registrations of new private cars in Norway last year, according to figures announced yesterday by a specialized organization.
With the big winner American Tesla at the top of the manufacturer ranking with a 12.2% market share, 138,265 electric cars were sold in the Nordic country last year, in other words electric vehicles accounted for 79.3% of total new car sales private use, according to the Road Traffic Information Council (Opplysningsrådet for veitrafikken, OFV).
Norway, a country with a large production of hydrocarbons but at the same time a champion in the promotion of cars with zero exhaust gas emissions, smashed its own previous world record, which was recorded in 2021 (64.5%).
By comparison, electric cars accounted for 8.6% of new registrations in the European Union in the first nine months of 2022.
In December, battery-only cars accounted for 82.8% of new car sales as many households rushed to get them before a tax incentive to buy them was scrapped and they became significantly more expensive.
Tesla’s Model Y (crossover SUV) captured 11.5% market share, with Elon Musk’s company boasting that it broke the sales record held by the legendary Volkswagen Beetle since 1969.
Norway has an ambition for all new cars sold in the country to be zero-emission, electric or hydrogen-burning by 2025, offering special incentives, above all tax, to do so.
However, as the sector matures, the authorities have now begun to remove some incentives that had a high fiscal cost.
From January 1, the exemption from VAT (25%) is no longer valid except for the purchase of a new electric car with a price below 500,000 kroner (47,500 euros). Those with a higher price are therefore subject to the tax.
Today, one in five cars on Norwegian roads is purely electric — a world record in this case as well.
