The ELN (National Liberation Army) guerrilla group refused this Tuesday (3) to join the six-month ceasefire agreement announced by Colombian President Gustavo Petro on New Year’s Eve.
In a statement, the ELN stated that its delegation in the negotiations did not discuss any bilateral proposal for a ceasefire with the government of the leftist and that there are no agreements on the matter.
On a social network, Petro had said that the agreement encompassed the five main armed groups in the country, including the ELN. The leader, who is a former guerrilla, promised to end the civil conflict in the Andean nation, which has lasted nearly six decades and left at least 450,000 dead between 1985 and 2018.
