Analysis prepared by the EU by its services on the main factors affecting food security

Today, the Commission published an analysis prepared by its services on the main factors affecting food security. The analysis examines the food security implications of factors such as climate change, environmental degradation, the economic impact of the coronavirus and the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Based on the most recent scientific evidence, this analysis identifies several types of key factors affecting food security: biophysical and environmental factors, factors related to research, innovation and technology, economy and market, chain performance food supply, as well as political, institutional, socio-cultural and demographic factors. The analysis also examines short-term and long-term trends as well as interconnections between the various factors. Stakeholder views were gathered through special consultations, which were taken into account in the analysis.

Food availability is not at stake in Europe today. However, food affordability is a growing concern for an increasing number of low-income households. Food availability, affordability, usability and stability cannot be taken for granted. Some of the factors can prove dangerous to food safety and expose vulnerabilities in our food system if not properly addressed. The EU has launched several initiatives to ensure a sustainable, inclusive and resilient food system with a realistic timetable and necessary means of support.
