El Salvadora country plagued until the spring by gangs of criminals, the so-called “maras”, recorded in 2022 the lowest homicide rate “in its history”, according to Attorney General Rodolfo Delgado.

The Central American country’s homicide rate retreated at “7.8 per 100,000 inhabitants,” Justice and Security Minister Gustavo Villatoro said during a press conference.

The Attorney General of Salvador, Rodolfo Delgado, exaggerated, stating that this is the “lowest amount in the history of Salvador.”

“This is a reduction that our country has never seen before, where society was used to violence and death,” he added with satisfaction.

In 2022, 495 homicides were recorded, compared to 1,147 the year before (or 18.1/100,000 inhabitants).

In 2019, when current president Naguib Bukele took office, the rate stood at 38 homicides per 100,000 residents, according to ministry statistics.

Mr Bukele boasted in December that his country had gone from being the most dangerous in the world to being the “safest in Latin America”.

For Minister Villatoro, there is no doubt that the reduction in violence is due to “war on gangs” conducted by the government of President Bukele, who imposed a state of emergency in late March.

The campaign, strongly criticized by rights groups, has led to the arrest and pre-trial detention of more than 60,000 people allegedly linked to the Maras, according to official figures.
