At least one person died and another 57 were injured in a train collision on the Mexico City subway, Mexico City, early Saturday (7), according to authorities.

The accident occurred between Potrero and La Raza stations, belonging to Line 3 of the Metro, which connects the north and south of the city. According to local press reports mentioned by the AFP news agency, the trains collided in the tunnel connecting the two stations.

Another four people who were trapped in a wagon were rescued and are not at risk, according to Omar Garcia, head of security for the city.

According to him, the person killed in the accident is a young woman. Garcia also shared an updated list of the injured, and the city’s mayor, Claudia Sheinbaum, said via Twitter that she had visited the crash site.

The metro in the Mexican capital has been the scene of different accidents in recent years. One of the most serious happened on Line 12 in May 2021, leaving 26 people dead and more than 70 injured. The tragedy was caused by the collapse of a 12-meter-high viaduct, where the subway used to pass, on one of the busiest streets in Mexico City.

The accident raised questions about the safety of one of the busiest subway systems in the world — opened in 1969, it is one of the main means of transport in the Mexican capital and its metropolitan area. The metro has been criticized for lack of maintenance and investment.

In another episode also in 2021, a fire left one person dead and 29 hospitalized in the transport system. In March 2020, two trains collided inside a station, leaving one dead and 41 injured.
