A 32-year-old Iranian man was arrested in the western German city of Castrop-Rouxel, accused of planning a terrorist attack using dangerous chemicals.
In a joint statement issued by the Düsseldorf public prosecutor’s office and the police departments of Recklinghausen and Münster, it is stated that the 32-year-old was suspected of preparing an Islamic-motivated attack. He was allegedly trying to obtain cyanide and ricin to use in the terrorist attack.
On Saturday night, a search was carried out at the 32-year-old Iranian’s residence in Castrop-Rouxel, a town located about 15 kilometers northwest of Dortmund and 24 kilometers northeast of Essen, in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia. Heavy police forces cordoned off the area, while men in protective suits searched the accommodation, according to the German News Agency (dpa).
The 32-year-old Iranian was arrested and will be brought before an investigator in the coming days, while the police proceeded with another arrest.
According to Bild newspaper, the German authorities were alerted a few days ago by a foreign intelligence agency about the risk of a chemical attack.
