Towards a crisis in NATO? Sweden says it cannot meet all of Erdogan’s demands

“Turkey confirms that we have done what we said we would do, but they also say that they are asking for things that we cannot or are not willing to give them,” Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristerson said.

For judgment within NATO? Sweden hopes that Turkey will approve its application to join the NATO military alliance, but cannot meet all of Ankara’s demands in return for Turkish support, Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristerson clarified on Sunday.

“Turkey confirms that we have done what we said we would do, but they also say that they are asking for things that we can’t or don’t want to to give them”, said the Swedish prime minister during a conference held by a think tank in his country.

Sweden, Finland and Turkey signed a tripartite agreement in 2022 aimed at overcoming Turkish objections to the two countries joining NATO, but Ankara insists that not all of its requirements have been met about terrorism.

Swedish ground combat units must also be ready to contribute to NATO’s defense in the Baltic states, the Swedish prime minister also said.

He said Sweden would join the 15-nation initiative for a joint missile defence, launched at a meeting of NATO defense ministers in October, called the “European Sky Shield”.

“The war in Ukraine shows how important it is to have a modern air defense to protect the civilian population and infrastructure,” Christerson noted.

It is noted that the White House wants the Nordic countries to join NATO, to “shield” them from Russian aggression while the war in Ukraine rages, but the Erdogan government took the opportunity to impose its own agenda for the Kurds in Stockholm and Helsinki. Ankara’s reaction to Christerson’s statements is expected.
