Ukrainian forces push back Russians in Bakhmut and Soledar but situation ‘difficult’ says President Zelensky
Ukrainian forces are repelling continuous attacks on the city of Bakhmut, in eastern Ukraine, and are holding their positions in neighboring Solendar, under very difficult conditions, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said this evening.
“Bahmut holds. And although most of the city has been destroyed by Russian shelling, our soldiers are repelling the Russians’ constant attempts to advance,” Zelensky said in his nightly address.
“Soledar is holding on, although the destruction is even greater and the situation is very difficult,” he added.
Zelensky also repeated thatRussia did not respect the truce which he unilaterally declared for Christmas after launching attacks on Ukrainian cities. “The Russians were shelling Kherson and firebombing right after Christmas,” he said, referring to the city that Russian forces abandoned in November.
“Wounds in Kramatorsk and other cities in Donbass – on political targets, at the same time that Moscow reported an alleged silence of arms,” he added.
Russia announced today that a missile attack on Kramatorsk killed 600 Ukrainian soldiers, but Reuters reporters who were at the scene found no signs of casualties.
