The “stereotypical” treatment of Meghan Markle’s wife by the royal family and its members’ fear that the American actress would “steal the limelight” is partly what Prince Harry attributed the problems that led to Megxit and what he reveals in the autobiography entitled “Reserve”, which is released on Tuesday.

In a 95-minute interview with journalist friend Tom Bradby that aired Sunday night on Britain’s ITV channel, the Duke of Sussex said he hoped he and Meghan would get on well with his brother William and Kate Middleton, now Prince and Princess of Wales.

“But very quickly it became Meghan v Kate. And that, when it’s on such public display, you can’t hide from it,” Prince Harry said.

He went on to say that the negative stereotyping of Meghan as a divorced mixed-race American actress was reinforced by the negative press. He revealed that William, although he never tried to change his mind about marrying Meghan, “expressed some concerns” warning him that it would be “really difficult” for him.

“To this day I still don’t understand what part he was talking about. But maybe, you know, maybe he predicted what the reaction of the British press would be,” he commented.

As revealed by excerpts of the interview released in the past few days, Prince Harry responded to the question about the personal nature of the revelations in his book by saying that people do not understand how his family leaked negative stories about Meghan.

He again accused the tabloids of wanting to stir up as much controversy as possible, as well as “certain members” of the royal family for working with them. “These particular members have decided to sleep with the devil,” he said.

He added that he faced “many, many years of lies being told about me and my family” and revealed that his father had told him that trying to change the tabloids was “probably a suicide mission”.

During the interview Harry is heard reading extracts from his autobiography. Among them is one that essentially accuses Camilla’s stepmother of leaking to the press a private conversation she had with William.

He also said he wanted a family, not an institution, but expressed doubt that his family could make that distinction, accusing them of dismissing his concerns about negative treatment of himself, Megan and their son as fantasy, resulting in “to fear for our lives.”

He nevertheless expressed hope for a reconciliation with his father and brother, saying the book has no intention of “hurting” the king and crown prince: “Forgiveness is 100% a possibility because I would like to get my father back . I would like to have my brother back.”

But he added that at the moment “I don’t recognize them, just as they probably don’t recognize me” and added that “they have shown absolutely no will to reconcile up to this point”. He denied that honesty “burns bridges” and wondered how silence will make things better.

Referring to the first revelation from the book, about the fight with his brother in 2019 that caused his back injury, Prince Harry said he saw in William in that particular incident a different degree of irritation than usual: “I saw the red mist in him”.

Prince Harry also addressed the emotional and mental impact of his mother’s death. Speaking about his passage through the tunnel where Princess Diana was killed he said “it’s just a short, simple, uncomplicated tunnel – no reason for anyone to die in it”.

Although he disputed, as in his book, the official findings on the accident, with the responsibility being attributed to the drunk driver, he said that he sees no point in reopening the investigation. He made it clear, however, that he believes the driver, Henri Paul, was blinded at the wheel by the flashes of the paparazzi following the vehicle. “The people who were primarily to blame for this got away with it,” he said. When asked what would have happened if the paparazzi had not chased his mother’s car, he replied “the result was not the same”.

He also talked about the guilt he felt when he couldn’t show his emotions while the country mourned and cried over the loss of his mother.

When asked if he will attend his father’s coronation in May, he declined to answer, saying “a lot can happen between now and then.” He also commented that King Charles struggled with being a parent, but he “tried”. He also revealed that Charles apologized for not offering help to his son earlier when he told him about his mental health problems.

The Duke of Sussex has given two more television interviews, on the American network CBS, which also airs late on Sunday, and on Good Morning America on Monday morning. On Tuesday, he will appear as a guest on a popular CBS talk show.
