A Ukrainian woman was sentenced by a court in Cairo to serve a sentence life imprisonment — that is, 25 years in Egypt — after being arrested in possession of it four kilos of cocainea judicial source told AFP yesterday.

“Liudmila Balakina, Ukrainian national, 39 years old, resident of the Netherlands, was sentenced to serve life imprisonment and to pay a fine of 100,000 Egyptian pounds”, or approx. 3,500 euros“because she was in possession of almost four kilograms of cocaine,” said the source.

The sentence can be appealed, he clarified.

The convicted woman was arrested in April 2022 at Cairo airport, where she arrived from Doha, when the drugs were found in her luggage, according to the judicial source.

According to the state-run newspaper Akhbar Alyoum, Ms. Balakina “admitted that she met an Egyptian man abroad,” who “paid her 2,500 dollars” to transport the drugs to Egypt.

In Egypt—one of the countries in the world where most executions are carried out, according to the non-governmental organization Amnesty International—drug trafficking involves even the death penalty.

In a typical such case, in September 2021, ten men, seven Pakistani nationals, one Iranian national and two Egyptian nationals, were sentenced to life imprisonment after the seizure of more than two tons of heroin and 99 kilograms of methamphetamine.
