A supervisory body linked to the US government filed a lawsuit against Republican deputy George Santos, the son of Brazilians who admitted to having lied on his resume to be elected, with accusations involving his campaign accounts.
The non-partisan Campaign Legal Center has asked the Federal Election Commission (FEC) to open an investigation into the congressman. The agency points out that Santos would have hidden donors and used part of the money collected to pay the rent of his residence.
“The commission [FEC] must investigate further what appear to be equally blatant lies about the way his campaign raised and spent money,” the lawsuit reads, referring to the congressman’s admissions that he lied on his campaign resume.
Contacted by the Reuters news agency, Santos’ office forwarded the questions to those responsible for the campaign, who did not respond.
The case gains relevance because issues involving the bills were considered the main flank of pressure from Democrats for the Department of Justice to investigate the deputy, who took office even in the midst of controversies. That’s because falsifying campaign finance is a federal crime.
