Boric and Petro call for urgent OAS meeting on coup acts in Brasilia

by

The president of Chile, Gabriel Boric, and Colombia, Gustavo Petro, urged this Monday (9) the OAS (Organization of American States) to convene an emergency meeting on the coup attacks carried out in Brasilia by supporters of the former president. President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) this Sunday (8).

Together at the Palacio de La Moneda in Santiago, the leaders called the scenes in the Brazilian capital an extreme right-wing coup that dates back to other historical periods: the democratic disruptions caused by military coups in Latin America between the 1960s and 1970s.

Boric described the coup attacks as unacceptable and condemned the “complicit silence”, which, he said, “cannot be relativized, nor forgotten”. “Our region has to assume a clear position”, continued Boric, adding that the OAS meeting would serve for a joint position of the countries of the region.

Petro said that far-right groups want to return the region to the times of Salvador Allende, in reference to resistance to leftist governments, such as the one installed at the time of the Chilean leader killed by the Armed Forces in 1973, in the episode that installed the dictatorship. by Augusto Pinochet.

“It’s time to say that what happened 50 years ago will never happen again, that Latin America’s path is irreversibly democratic”, said the Colombian, the first left-wing leader to assume the government of his country.

“What is in danger is the democratic pact in the Americas. This is not an exclusively South American problem. The same thing that happened in Brasilia happened in Washington”, he recalled, referring to the January 6 attack in the USA. It’s a far-right coup against something they don’t want: democracy.”

The Secretary General of the OAS, Uruguayan Luis Almagro, criticized the acts of vandalism on a social network. Also on Sunday, he said that the attacks on Brazilian institutions constitute a repugnant action and an attack against democracy. “These actions are fascist in nature.”

The IACHR (Inter-American Commission on Human Rights), an arm of the OAS, also condemned the coup acts and said that demands from civil society should be channeled through democratic channels. “The right to assemble must be peaceful, without weapons and with adherence to the rule of law. All those responsible must be investigated and sanctioned.”
